Avengers TimeSuit!
My work on the project mainly revolved look development and texturing the suits at ILM which was then to be passed on to other vendors and toymakers.

The team and I quickly realised how loose and fluid the concept was and had to come up with wedges of colours and patterns for the suit paneling, logo colour, logo placement. At one point it was mostly black with a red embossed logo, then it was a gunmetal grey with a white laser cut-in logo on the shoulder pads.

We wanted the suit to feel that it was plausibly manufactured by real world materials so we iterated through many materials from kevlar, carbon fibre to racing motorcycle jackets. At one point a google home mini speaker was also an inspiration!

The suits also had to be new and in mint condition, which didnt help us with the CG curse so every stitch, fingerprint and imperfection had to be detailed in to just make it believable.

Model by Jei Wang, additional textures by Panya Souvanna and Harsh Agrawal.

The ILM timesuit featured in these shots. It took quite a number of iterations to nail the colour palette. I tried everything from "storm trooper white" to"warmachine grey" to "black panther black".

The ILM timesuit featured in these shots. Notice the shoulder piece paneling and LEDs , they show up in differently in various parts of the film ( what continuity? ) as they were worked on by different vendors (Framestore, Dneg).

Closeup of the chest piece. The only constant in the design was the Pym Particle "necklace" that you would recognise from Antman's suit. There were many hours of debate on the size of those red squares...

The material qualities was a constant debate which parts were rigid, which parts could wrinkle, the specular response under a myriad of lighting conditions.

The team @ILMSG was tasked to bring back the NY battle from Avengers 1! Also we had to mould the time suit onto several of our heroes and fix any stretching and fitting problems!

The model had several layers of suit which allowed the FX team to simulate the nano tech effect as it formed around our heroes. The black leather was the underlying layer, followed by the red embossed material, layered by the grey kevlar and metal bits.

One of the few back views of the suit. I remember coming up with several panel designs to allow some flexibility and articulation. Notes ranged from "get rid of those angel wings!" to "looks too skeletal".

Final time we see the time suit on Cap.
